What are the essential tools that every IT person should have in the modern IT world? That is the idea behind a new Kingston University module called IT Toolbox. Over a 12 week semester, first year students will be guided through a series of activities such as blogging, running a server, client and server side scripting, search, social networking and problem solving. Each of those activities will be published here and anyone is welcome to join in.

I have spoken to a number of you who have started late and also to the course team and we have decided to set the following FINAL deadlines for all activities: 7th January 2010.

This should give you plenty of time to get to the minimum level which is 6 part 1s plus 2 part 2s (or the equivalent).

If you have not reached that level by that date then you will have to take the examination which is proposed (but not confirmed) for the morning of the 18th of January.

I will post a list of all Knumbers for those student who HAVE PASSED the module on January 10th. I will publish an interim set of figures by the 11th of December.

Many of you have already passed the module and are now working towards getting a higher grade - which is grade.

Please note that once you have reached a pass level for the module it is up to you which activities you complete.

If you have any questions about this please raise them here. I will not publish comments that talk about your personal circumstances.

Hi Jonathan!

Hi Jonathan,
is it possible to know our current grades?

Jonathan replies: I will try and produce a list of students and their provisional grades (so far) just before I go away on the 11th. Can't promise because its a lot of work but I'll try.

Just to clear up, if I complete all exercises before 7th January then my grade will not be capped, even if I would miss the normal tuesday deadlines?

Jonathan replies: That is correct!

Wow, that sure takes any pressure off. I would think any human being (who got college grades to start a degree) would be able to finnish these activities well before that :)

Jonathan replies: I hope so too. We are being generous because some people have started later than expected - we are not lowering the standard however and will expect proper responses from everyone.

If I've already submitted an assignment, but it had mistakes or I've redone it can I re-submit the improved version or not?

Jonathan replies: Yes, please resubmit.

hey jonathan! do you have to complete activities 1-6 part 1 and part 2 in order to get 60% or is it just activity 6 part 1 and 2?

Jonathan replies: How do I make this clearer? To get 60% you would have needed to complete 12 parts in total as each is worth 5%. So, 6 x Part 1 + 6 x Part 2.

What do you think?
