Trends in mobile (lecture 10)

In this final lecture session we will explore some of the changes that have happened in the marketplace since the start of the module.

Take a look at the new Nokia N95

N95main

Integration: camera, music players, PIMs, Internet, GPS

Wifi

Connectivity: Bluetooth, WiFi

Mapping

Location: GPS, mapping, find my nearest

Presence: IM, call handling

Browser

Internet: full browsers, mobile versions of sites

Internet Calling

Calling: VoIP over data or WiFi, Truphone, Fring, The Cloud

Applications: RSS, Mobizines

Participation: blogging, Twitter

Predictions

Real browsers will dominate but it is still worth making sure that sites are designed to be light and useful to visitors from their mobile
Businesses will increasingly look at complementing Internet with specific mobile functionality
Maps (and GPS) will be everywhere
WiFi will become very important. Bluetooth will be a useful data transfer technology.
VoIP will become very important and phones will come preconfigured
YouTube will become the dominant television service for mobiles
Call costs will fall including roaming
SMS will be replaced by IM
Advertising will become an increasingly important revenue stream for mobile (dominated by Google)
Operators will be battle with ARPU and customer retention

What is worth revising?

Key features of the different technologies: RFID, GPS, WiFi, WAP, Bluetooth, GSM, 3G, SMS etc
Key ideas in mobile: personalisation, communication, location, presence
Recognise what technologies cannot do: accuracy, distance, mobility, charging models
Build a mental model of how the technologies fit together with each other
How the technologies are being used by businesses (and how they are charged for)
Privacy and usability issues
Companies that can be partnered with to help build a mobile business

Was a delightfully fun lecture, glad you got your phone debranded and all. Though there is apparently another way to get it debranded (using something called NSS, which changes your phone id so that when you officially update it, it will use generic firmware instead). This way is alot safer since you can update your firmware in future with generic stuff whenever updates occur (I think n95 will have loads since its still new). Does your phone browser do flash? Because youtube on your phone sounds good.

PS What ever happened to your new white design for your site? You said it'll be done around the second semester and that if we took mobile business we'd see it! Thats the whole reason I took it in the first place haha (kidding)!

Jonathan replies: Thanks for the comments. There is no new firmware for the N95 so I understand that NSS will not work yet. I will keep an eye on that. Flash does run on the N95.

Yes, there was suppose to be a new version of this site by now but I have been derailed by working on this big EU project (unexpected).

I have now completed the briefing document for my designer and the new site will be ready in a few weeks.

Of course because this is NOT Blackboard you will be able to see the changes even after you have graduated!
