SMS Activity

This week’s activity is about short messaging. It will require some research but some of the ideas will already be familiar. The deadline this week is Thursday midnight to enable feedback next Friday when there will be a lecture.

  1. Describe briefly how a text message travels from your handset to a friend’s.
  2. Find a site that allows you to send an SMS (free or paid) from the Internet to your handset. List the URL
  3. In what way is the journey of the message different when it is sent from the Internet rather than another phone?
  4. Describe how “voting messages” sent from phones to a TV show can be routed using keywords to conduct a poll?
  5. What is “reverse billing” and why is it important?
  6. Describe the workings of a news alert service that sends an SMS when major news occurs?
  7. Is SMS cheaper or more expensive than making a call?

I've been searching around for a while. The major internet search engines seem to have a difficulty seperating actual sms voting competitions from the underlyning mechanics. You spend hours sifting through irrelevant information.

Jonathan replies: You perhaps need to form your own "mental model" and then see if you can prove it. I generally start with news sites as well as technology suppliers who might help.

What do you think?
