Location based services: activity

One of the big ideas in mobile business is being able to locate an individual subscriber and personalise content and services based on their location. This activity is about understanding the difference between the technologies: cell location, GPS and RFID.

Research the answers to these questions and then feedback your answers using the survey form provided. This activity should take around 2 hours. The deadline is Friday at midday and I will provide feedback next weekend. Remember that all activities carry marks in the exam.

Here is the survey to feed back your answers. Remember that it is better to guess than to leave things blank. Marks are for participation not getting everything right.

Questions
  1. Explain very briefly how a GSM mobile phone network identifies the location of you and your mobile?
  2. How accurate is this location and why?
  3. How does a GPS Satellite receiver calculate its location?
  4. What messages are sent from your handset to the satellite? (Answer very carefully)
  5. How could a GPS enabled mobile phone report its position back to an application?
  6. How does the ticket barrier at a Tube Station know who is passing through the barrier?
  7. Describe the technology that HMV and Virgin use to stop customers from stealing DVDs from their stores

Jonathan replies: You need to explore how GPS works. I would use standard starting points such as Wikipedia and Howitworks and search google for terms such as "How X works".
