Choosing your case study company

As you will have read in the module guide you must choose a retailer around which to base a case study for the exam. Although you can change your mind at any time up until the exam itself, now would be a good time to make a choice.

You may work in a small group but members of a group may prepare different documents or the same document as they wish.
You can annotate the document with pen or highlighting
You are encouraged to include diagrams and tables
The document you create should be suitable for showing to the organisation but can be in note form rather than long paragraphs of text

The ideal case study
  1. A medium sized UK retailer (too small and they won’t have the resources to implement your ideas, too large and they are unlikely to take you seriously)
  2. Already online but doing things badly. Sites that are ready performing well provide less scope for improvement.
  3. A company that you find interesting.
  4. One in a market where there are active competitors from whom your company can learn.
Prohibited companies

Do not choose the following. They are either too big, too small or unlikely to provide you with sufficient material to make interesting recommendations.

  • Amazon
  • Play.com or any other companies selling CDs, DVDs or games
  • Sites selling mobile phones
  • Dixons
  • Argos
  • John Lewis, Selfridges, Harrods or any other department store
Please note

You do not need to have your choice approved. Indeed researching and choosing is part of the exercise.

is the deadline for this assignment only in the exam or do we have to submit this before aswell?

Jonathan replies: The deadline is the exam - no earlier separate submission.

I’m sorry because I couldn’t understand exactly what you want from us for case study I’m confused and I couldnt decide which site I should choice for my case study I will wait to the 7th of November to ask you I hope this time not too late .
Think you very much

Jonathan replies: Its not too late. If you have read the module guide you should understand. You need to choose a site to study and make recommendations. You create a report and bring this into the exam.

Are we going to have the chance or privilege to have you or someone take a look at our report for the case study (of the exam) before the exam so as to know if we're on the right track or if our report is on the track?

Jonathan replies: Lol no! It would be impossible to evaluate all but there will be a chance to discuss and ask questions. As you will see from the module guide choosing your case study is part of the exercise as is deciding what goes into it.

Hello sir, the maximum page limit for the case study is strictly 10 pages, however if i choose to print out screen shots of the chosen site, does it still count towards the final report? or could this be placed in the index. I am using Microsoft Word to produce my report using font size 10, is this allowed? or is it strictly hand written notes only!

Thanks
Gopi

Jonathan replies: 10 pages is the limit. 10 point Word documents are fine. I would include thumbnails rather than big screenshots in your report which might take up a maximum of two pages. You are allowed to use a highlighter or written annotations on top of your printed notes.

What do you think?
