In looking for books on programming I came across some interesting e-commerce books that are worth a look if you are seriously interested in getting into the subject. I came out of the bookshop with most of these, although I could have got them for less online.
Mastering E-Business, Jonathan Groucutt, Paul Griseri, 2004
This a great introductory book covering many of the business issues. It would be the sort of book to hand to a skeptical client.
E.Biz, Geoffrey Sampson, 2003
Another introduction and at a higher level than Mastering E-Business. It will help with thinking about the role of e-business.
Mining Google Web Services: Building Applications with the Google API, John Paul Mueller, 2004
A real hybrid. This is a book about how to create applications using Google’s Application Programming Interface. It demonstrates the use of a range of scripting approaches, presents some great case studies and brings the concept of web services to life.
The Unusually Useful Web Book, June Cohen, 2003
I would never normally buy a book with such a corny title but this is excellent. It is full of checklists about e-commerce, design and search engine optimisation. Read this book!
Designing Web Sites That Sell (Designwhys), Shayne Bowman, 2002
This is an unusual book in that it is mainly about design but this is design with a purpose: to create effective retail sites. Worth reading if you are interested in the effects of good design on customer decisions.
Train of Thoughts: Designing the Effective Web Experiences, John Lenker, 2002
Another unusual book which takes as its theme the journey a website or ecommerce visitor takes through a site. Some very effective lessons and case studies.
