Mobile Business Assignment

Written by: Jonathan Briggs

January 31, 2005 [6870 views]

This assignment is compulsory for all students taking the Mobile Business Module. It involves creating a report and then answering questions about that report under examination conditions. This assessment approach has proved highly effective in evaluating understanding of the ideas in the module.

Your task
Design a mobile application for a specific organization or audience and write a proposal covering the technical, business and creative aspects of your idea.
  • Describe the functionality of your application
  • Outline the demand for your application. Describe competitors that exist in the market place?
  • Illustrate the application with a set of screen shots
  • How will the application make money/save costs for you or your client?
  • What are the technical components that make up the platform for developing and delivering your application?
  • Describe the integration with other information systems inside the organization or the internal systems that will have to be created.
  • Who are the partners that you need to deal with to make the application work?
  • Outline the steps you would need to take to implement your application
  • Provide a summary of the costs involved (technology, license fees, 3rd party data etc)
  • Discuss the problems or barriers you are likely to encounter

You are not expected to implement the application as part of this module.

Suggested topics
To help you, here is a list of suitable topics that you may choose from. You may suggest further topics here and have them approved.
  • Implementing m-commerce for a UK High Street retailer (retailer must be identified)
  • Mobile workforce support tools for a named organization with a mobile sales or support team (organization must be clearly identified)
  • Mobile patient monitoring for chronic disease management
  • A mobile multiplayer game with a clearly defined revenue model
  • A location based service delivered over mobile devices for a specific organization or audience

A downloadable single-user Java game is not a suitable topic. Switch to Mobile Technology if that is what you want to design.

You must take care to research that the application you are proposing does not already exist. Adapting an existing application for a different client or audience is ok as long as the application would need to be re-implemented.

You may work in a group of no more than 3 people or individually; pairs is recommended. Larger groups may have their marks reduced. No additional marks will be given to those who decide to work on their own. Each student in a group will be awarded an individual mark in the examination and from past experience these marks may vary widely even where a group has worked closely together on the proposal.

Your proposal should not be longer than 10 sides (11 point A4) although you may annotate the proposal with a highlighting pen or written notes. You must take your proposal into the examination and attach it to your exam answers. There are no specific marks allocated to the report but it will be taken into account in assessing borderline cases.

The assignment looks very stimulating and challenging. However i was hoping that the assignment and the exam would have specified percentage weights. I was also wondering if you could supply some past papers, as i couldn't find any on klic, so that we will know what to expect and have an indication of how to structure the assignment.

Thanks for the comments. The marks are awarded to the examination only although being poorly prepared for the exam (by not doing the assignment) would put you at a disadvantage.

At Kingston, we are constantly looking for ways of assessment that value the work done during the course but also discriminate between those who genuinely contribute and those who are merely passengers in groups. This exam method has worked well for me in the past and that is why I use it.

This is the first time that this module has run and therefore there are no past papers. I will be providing a mock paper and marking scheme in the next few weeks.

Hi, Jonathan I wanted to ask would be possible to approve Debenhams as the client for my case study?
However, I would just like to focus on their flower service, rather then the whole business.

Their flower service is called Debenhams Flowers, which has its own site. They also sell wine, champagne and chocoloates.

Thanks.

M-commerce for Debenhams Flowers would certainly be an appropriate choice. You don't actually have to have the specific company approved (although I am happy to do so).

Other people only need to seek my approval if they want to do something that is very different from my list of suggested topics.

for the assignment, I am thinking of looking at mobile patients monitoring for diabetes. I know there has been some research in this field but this technology hasn't been introduced yet, is it still possible for me to still do my assignment on this?

our organisation is based on the London underground tube system

provide an mobile infromation system to their consumers via the use of bluetooth technology.

The main functions we aim to provide are:
- up-to-date information on departing and arriving trains
- Information on delays and security alerts
- general station information
- Multi-lingual formats of route planners can be made available for tourists
- News, sports update
if could provide us with any feedback

Patient monitoring would be good!

Hinesh. This could be good but you would need to be careful about Bluetooth. How would people access it? From an information point? or Bluejacked as they travel in the tunnels. Might be hard to explain. Would you sell it? What would be the incentive for TfL?

Our idea is introduce mobile technology to craft workers in a local authority to enable them to carry out their jobs more efficiently. Currently these workers (who deliver maintenance and repairs for homes in a particular area) rely on paper-based processes which costs the authority money and efficiency savings.

If Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC Phone Edition devices were rolled out to staff then the quality of service to tenants would be improved greatly, and it would mean that workers would not have to return to depots all the time to catch up on paperwork.

The solution would be built using the Microsoft .NET Framework, which integrates directly into the local authority's CRM system. The provider (not yet known) would exchange data with the CRM System using a specific interface tool and store it in an SQL Server database. This data along with device configuration preferences is then synchronised with the mobile devices over the O2 GPRS network.

Any feedback on this proposal is most welcome!

Hi JB,

There is a few ideas we have thought about. Could you have a readand give some feedback, and help on choosing an idea. Could you advise us on the technologies!

Heres the three we have thought about, we know its getting late!!

Pizza Hut SMS alerts

People register with pizza hut, via either registration forms or online. Their phone number is recorded if they are happy to receive offers from Pizza hut. Once a person enters the catchments area by reading their XY co-ordinates, the SMS server from pizza hut delivers a message with a special offer. This offer can be redeemed by showing the SMS message to the pizza hut advisor, and the unique number in the text is discarded once the offer has been redeemed, therefore not allowing the offer to be used more than once.

GPS tracking system on wild life

Safari parks could make business, by tagging the wild life with GPS collars. By doing this they people at the safari park will know where the animals are so that people driving through the parks know where the animals are. This would also help the park owners see which animals are not moving and might be hurt.

Gym SMS alerts

SMS alerts in the gym, where by the target market are in the gym working out, and they could receive promotional text messages for certain offers that are running, for example restaurant offers or training instructors are available to hire at a certain time. The income from this would be brought from the customers purchasing the offers that available.
This also could be used to remind users that there membership renewals are due or to promote new business such a promotional offer if they sign up a new member to the gym they could receive percentage off or a free gift when they show the SMS.

sorry about the large amounts, will be grateful for feedback! We cannot decide!

Thanks

Jonathan replies: Part of the assignment is for you to choose an appropriate area. I have not given anyone specific feedback. Take a look at the advice I have given and use that to evaluate each idea. I am not looking for anything totally new. Just the application of mobile technology to an organisation.

Hi Jonathan,

Just a quick question about the coursework, does it have to be an
application that uses a mobile phone or can we propose a new idea to a
specific organisation that doesn't involve a mobile phone but does use
one of the technologies discussed.

Just a bit confused as you can see??

Thanks

Jonathan replies: If you had been at the lectures and read the documents you would be clear that this is about more than mobile phones. It is about mobile information systems and appropriate mobile use of these technologies is fine.

What do you think?
