Increasing traffic through improving Google ranking

Any new site starts from a disadvantage and this one is no different; it is not listed on the major search engines including Google. Over the next few weeks I need to improve its relevant inbound traffic by promoting the site to other relevant sites, search engines and blogging directories.

I am well aware of the importance of inbound links both in attracting search engine spiders and in improving my ranking within search results.

I have promoted a blog before and it can be a rather piecemeal effort. This time I intend to record the process including all the search engines I register with and blogs I discuss things on. I will also describe any problems I have.

We have designed the site to be as search engine friendly as we can. Titles, links and URLs have been optimised, site code is very straightforward and I hope that the content is interesting and relevant.

Here are the promotional steps I intend to take. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received. I will add comments to this post as I register and comment.

Target audience:
students and others interested in e-commerce and mobile information systems research, teaching and development
Brief description of the site (needed for registration):
e-commerce and mobile teaching, research and development including case studies, activities, worksheets and student discussions from Professor Jonathan Briggs, Kingston University UK and the OTHER media.
Keywords:
Electronic commerce, e-commerce, e-business, m-business, m-commerce, mobile, teaching, lectures, discussions, research, white papers, case studies, student, Kingston University, London, the OTHER media, development, expert, UK.
RSS/Atom Feeds:
I need to add XML feeds to my site so that it can be read through newsreader software. I hope to complete this by the middle of October.
Reciprocal Links:
Many blogging directories require a link back to qualify for inclusion. I do not want to cover the site with banners and buttons but will add a link to this page whenever it is necessary.

I have submitted this site to dmoz - the open directory project. This is reviewed by human editors and is hard to get listed in but worth a try because Google uses it as one of its starting points.

Best way is to go to open an account on some big well known forums, like devshed.com, phpbuilder.com, etc etc and try to post a post about your website there (maybe ask for feedback), also put your website address in your signature of your profile and every time you post a comment it will contain a hyperlink to your site. Googles spiders scan these forums and websites weekly giving you a much higher ranking. Its kind of cheating but works since google site ranking works by looking at other site which rank to you. If the site which links to you has a high ranking it counts more then if a low ranking site links to you. This is the best way to get a high ranking. Worked for me, after 2 weeks my website is tops if you seaarch for my name not the forums where I normally posts since this was a great problem for me. IE. when I searched for germanjulian all the top 40 links went to forum posts.

Search Engine Journal is a good place to find information about how Google and other search engines work.

Increasing blog traffic has also been my problem. I also don't want too many links with other bloggers as I find it difficult to sustain cyberrelationships, meaning I have be nice and visit their blogs once in a while, and I also tend to be a bit forgetful and yeah, lazy. But since I posted something that is the "in" thing here in my country (a Korean drama series would you believe), I have generated a lot of hits. So, I guess posting something that is very much a hot issue is one way of increasing blog visitors.
