What are the essential tools that every IT person should have in the modern IT world? That is the idea behind a new Kingston University module called IT Toolbox. Over a 12 week semester, first year students will be guided through a series of activities such as blogging, running a server, client and server side scripting, search, social networking and problem solving. Each of those activities will be published here and anyone is welcome to join in.

Thanks to over 250 people who completed activity 1 for IT Toolbox on time. Good work! We will go through the activity in the class today and discuss some of the issues raised. Many of the answers will be touched upon in today's lecture but we will also have a chance to cover some of the questions that puzzled people.

  1. If Google takes 6-10 weeks to crawl the web, how come results are so fast?
  2. How do I get to the US version of Google?
  3. Why are the results different?
  4. What is the real meaning of the estimate of the number of results?
  5. What are the differences between search engines focused on different international areas, aside from language differences?
  6. How does PageRank work?
  7. Did you want quotes of a bibliography for information we had found?
  8. What topic is this related to?
  9. Why on some searches would only 1 sponsored link be returned? Do the sites in question have to pay for that exclusivity and do how do they confirm the particular searched that they would like this exclusivity?
  10. Why is Google used more than Yahoo?
  11. Will there ever be a website that can beat Google?
  12. Where there any correct answers already set or does it depend entirely on what we do?
  13. Why do computer science and computer studies have the same lectures, and what has programming got to do with my course multimedia?
  14. How would you search for things in the last 6 months?
  15. How does Google puts the most popular searches to the front and the least popular at the back, when there is so much information on the web?
  16. Could I have searched for The Godfather instead of Kanye West?
