10 Truths about the iPad from a UK perspective

We took delivery of 3 iPads this morning to allow us to test our apps and prototypes for real. It’s a remarkable device. Here are a few reactions.

  1. You won't want to share it - the apps are very personal and it feels more like a phone than a PC from that perspective
  2. Sites need redesigning to look good on it - most sites will need some small style changes and the checkout process for most stores will need modifying
  3. iPhone apps look terrible scaled up. All apps need re-imagining for the iPad to take advantage of the excellent screen
  4. You will often leave your laptop behind - this does 95% of what most people will want. Trust me.
  5. You will end up paying lots for content and service; it's like shaving with iPad being the razor and the apps being the blades. Apple is onto a revenue winner.
  6. You’ll need a case and some accessories; I need a keyboard, a case and a projector video connector asap particularly so that I can give Keynote demos without my laptop.
  7. You’ll really need to think about where you live; suddenly it matters that you are in the UK with Amazon, iTunes and ABC all refusing to fully support UK customers. I'm going to experiment with VPNs and proxying. Interesting legal issues here because I am willing to pay for everything but companies consider where I live to matter.
  8. It's a bit heavier than you expect but feels solid with a decent build quality - everyone in the office wants one and so will every kid on the planet
  9. It works really well as a conference phone - thanks Truphone
  10. The cost of developing really good apps just went up. This raises the bar and entry level apps are not going to sell

And the game will change again when iPhone OS 4.0 comes out!

Here are some of the changes I think we are going to have to make to sites: iPad Appification:Changes needed to sites to make them iPad friendly

Concur on all points. I'll add that the iPad has mass appeal. At Sunday dinner, Grandpa wanted one for books and maps. Kids loved the games. Teens were instant playing Netflix, ABC shows and checking social sites.

Jonathan - Thanks for this article. Please could you comment further on which aspects of site will need to change to 'look good'. You said "Sites need redesigning to look good on it - most sites will need some small style changes and the checkout process for most stores will need modifying". Please clarify if you can. Thanks
Liz
